Little did I know that the dog who would surpass almost every single beagle record would arrive in January of 2007, just a month after our record-breaking 2006.
Then came 2008, the year Mikey shone above all others. Mikey consistently won Best In Shows, of which he now has 35. He also has 30 Runner up Best In Shows. No other hound or beagle in Philippine show dog history has won more. Mikey is also the Kennel Club of Cebu and Cavite Canine Club’s Dog of the Year. He is the country’s Hound of the Year and the Beagle Fancier’s Club Beagle of the Year.
To top it all, Mikey won the 2008 National and PCCI Dog of the Year awards. He did it in dominant fashion, accumulating over 10,000 all-breed points. He now has close to 700 Hall of Fame points.
The National top dog competition, which was brought back in 2006, is an accumulative total of all the points scored in all the shows in the country plus the big PCCI shows. The PCCI top dog competition only counts all the large and prestigious PCCI shows. The PCCI is the AKC’s equivalent in the Philippines.
Mikey’s accomplishment in 2008 makes it the seventh consecutive year, since our entry into the show beagle world in 2002, that a beagle owned and/or bred by Olympic Gold has become the PCCI’s top hound and beagle. This would never have been possible if not for the breeders who entrusted their lovely dogs to us. Thank you so much.
We would like to thank all the judges who took the time out to judge Mikey, win or lose. Your accolades serve as our inspiration and your criticisms serve as our guide.
This year, 2008, Mikey, as the country’s top dog, earned the right to represent the Philippines in the AKC Eukanuba World Challenge on December 13 to 14. Wish us luck.
Dog showing in the Philippines has been in existence for over forty years now. Finally, after over four decades, two beagles are #1, the first being Bumper in 2006 and the second being Mikey in 2008. Bumper created history while Mikey added a new chapter. Before Bumper and Mikey, only one other beagle made it to the top ten all-breeds, Striker, Bumper's sire, who finished #8 top dog All-Breed in 2003. Like father, like daughter!
Olympic Gold Beagles is a small hobby kennel located in Manila, Philippines. I started showing rotts in 1993, but had to stop soon thereafter as I went off to take up my tertiary studies in Canada. My beagle kennel was established only in 2002, with the arrival of Multi BISS / Multi RUBIS / Phil HOF / Am Ch / Asian Ch Windkist Strike Zone, the Philippines' number one hound and beagle for 2002, 2003 and 2004. As of the moment, I am still in the process of adding the final pieces of Olympic Gold's foundation stock, adhering to the principle of one of my mentors, " the shortest path to breeding success is a great line." The beagles of Olympic Gold are line bred to top producing and winning beagles in the United States and other parts of the world.
I don't aim to produce the most number of champions as I take pride in breeding selectively, breeding only the best. I'm into dog showing and breeding because of my love for dogs. Breeding is a passion, not a money-making venture. I strive to produce quality champions, giving uttermost importance to producing beagles that are healthy with sound temperaments. Let us earn and provide for our dogs and not the other way around. My goal is to promote ethical, responsible and quality breeding, while advocating responsible ownership. At Olympic Gold, I take pride in breeding to conform to the standard. Quality and not quantity is key.
The year 2006 was significant for all Philippine beagle enthusiasts. It will always be remembered as the year Bumper created history and the year the Beagle Fanciers Club of the Philippines was formed and granted affiliation by the PCCI.
Being one of the most popular breeds in the country, beagles rightfully deserve a breed club to protect its interests. As the club’s founding president, I would like to assure all beagle lovers that all of us officers will try to our best to safeguard the best interests of our beloved breed.
